Mise-en-scene blog tasks

1) Find a distinctive still image and write an analysis of the mise-en-scene. Use each of the aspects you've learned in the lesson.

CLAMPS.
  • Costume- Both characters are wearing quite ordinary outfits meaning not much detail is put into also suggesting that no attention should be diverted towards the costume. However it could also infer that they are at home which is why they are wearing comfortable clothing.
  • Lighting- The lighting is mainly fixated onto their faces since they are holding their phones which is reflecting the screens light to their face . The harsh lighting can suggest that what ever they are looking at seems to be important and that they should be alert whilst looking at it.
  • Actor (placement and movement)- The placement of the characters seems to be structured as if they are hunched closed to each other indicating some sort of discomfort or urgency meaning it does not matter how they are sat the most important thing to them at the moment is what is going on their phones.
  • Make-up-  There does not seem to be a lot of use of make-up on the characters however because of the way the lighting has been structured upon their face, it does look like their has been some usage of concealer to brighten up the face giving it a sort of glow.
  • Props-  The main prop that has been portrayed in the image is the phone as it brings the whole scene together since it connects to each aspects of clamps. The other prop used is the toilet since the male character has placed his arm against almost leaning into using it as support.
  • Setting- Not much of the setting has been shown just a glimpse of it leaving much room for imagination. However we can ensure that they are in some sort of bathroom which does not make sense since they are literally crouching which is quite out of the ordinary as any bathroom does not involve crouching unless the ceiling is levelled really low.

2) Find TWO film or TV extracts on YouTube from different genres (e.g. horror, sci-fi, costume drama). Embed them in your blog post and write a comparison of the mise-en-scene in each.

The Notebook    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EemLsTG5fX8

 The Conjuring      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rRuulhJ2ARQ

'The Notebook' and 'The Conjuring' are both two completely different genres hence one being a romance film and the other being a horror film.

  • Costume- Both are set in the 1900's which suggests that their similarity outweighs their sense of genre. The costume design for 'The Notebook' is very simple as during that scene rain is heavily being poured causing the costume to be drenched so no vivid detail has been added to the designing. The costume design for 'The Conjuring' is very free when it comes to the female characters since during that scene they are being thrown around in some sense. Therefore due to the flowing movement of the costume it gives it a more dramatic effect in regards of the force  between the characters.
  • Lighting-In this particular scene of the 'The Notebook' you can infer that due to the rain and its darkness, the lighting has been a main focus regarding the way its positioned to portray the character's body language and facial expression. In the scene for ' The Conjuring' the character itself is adjusting the lighting meaning the holding of the torch gives it a surprise element. It also creates a form of suspense since the audience and the character herself is unable to see what is going to appear in front of them.
  • Actor (placement and movement)- Both the films characters are mainly spread out yet withing a short distance with each other. In 'The Notebook' their movement is very out of the order as one minute they are facing each other and then they are facing away. This makes it seem hectic but at the most it engages the audience as their attention moves from one to another and not on a set place. This is also very similar in 'The Conjuring'.
  • Make-up- In both the scenes the makeup is depicted by the way the lighting is positioned meaning if the lighting is far from their face their face tends to be gloomy and not i focus but if the lighting is primarily on them you can clearly see the facial expressions being portrayed on the character's face.
  • Props-In 'The Notebook' scene no props have been used. However, in 'The Conjuring' props have been used such as a torch, rope, cross, etc. This concludes the scene since it gives an overview on what their job actually is, an outlook on what they do as a living.
  • Setting- In 'The Notebook', the scene is set outdoor which seems to be on some sort of harbour which explains the lake behind them. The rain used dramatises the whole concept of the scene as the characters are conversing. In 'The Conjuring',the scene is set indoors mainly in the family's basement which also dramatises the whole idea of being in the darkness. The basement being a really eerie place depicts the tension and suspense the setting clearly creates.
