Cinematography video feedback/learner response

Create a new blogpost called 'Cinematography video feedback and learner response'. Make sure your video is on YouTube and embedded in this blogpost.

1) Type up your feedback/comments from your teacher.

  • Having watched both versions, the widescreen version is definitely better – this is an important lesson in filming and equipment. The portrait version also seems to just play a loop rather than the full narrative. In terms of future filming, see Mr Harrison to make sure you can use a tripod with the phone in the landscape position or alternatively borrow one of our cameras and bigger tripods.

  • Focusing on cinematography, you’ve got a good range of shots and in the main they are correctly labelled (one exception – POV is point of view, not point in view). The only thing I’d mention is the high angle shot doesn’t particularly communicate much meaning (it looks more like an establishing shot than something to make the victim look vulnerable). Similarly, you could have used a low angle shot of the person chasing her to make him look powerful or dangerous.

  • There was some good camera movement and again it was generally correctly labelled (I think one tracking label should have said pan but overall it was pretty accurate).

  • As an overall production, this was lacking sound in terms of effectiveness for an audience. The initial conversation either needed to be audible or you needed music over the top. It sounds like you did add a little music to the chase sequence but it’s very quiet and not particularly scary or tense – think about selection of music and also audio levels.

2) Now reflect on your work and write your own summary of the comments and feedback you have received. Write three WWWs and three EBIs.

  • In terms of timing with editing, it went really well.
  • Accurate shot labelling
  • Good narrative
EBI
  • Not portrait but landscape
  • Some clips are bit too long than others
  • No dialogue

3) Learner response: think about what you learned about cinematography making the video and also watching others. What will you do differently when you start the coursework in the summer? What tips or tricks have you learned from others that you can use next time? Are there any specific aspects of camerawork that you need to revise or practice?

I need to remember to always film landscape and to always meet the brief by having the time limit to 1 minute. Go over the shots and make sure that next time I know what shot is what.
